Olivem 1000 is a natural plant material extracted from olive oil, which helps to easily combine water and oils. This emulsifier has the ability to maintain a normal PH level balance in cosmetic products, giving the product a special lightness and deep moisturising effect. Skin and hair care products containing Olivem 1000 are very well absorbed into the skin, easily distributed, do not leave a feeling of oiliness, provide long term hydration and give the skin softness and elasticity.
Olivem 1000 Cetearyl Olivate has a maximum recommended oil-phase of ~25% (including the emulsifier).
We find the stability of Olivem 1000 is improved with the addition of a water-phase thickener like our Xanthan Gum (Soft or Clear), used at about 0.2%.
Consider the use of a co-emulsifier such as r GMS (Glyceryl Stearate) at 1 – 2% to further improve stability.
Fatty alcohols such as Behenyl Alcohol, Cetyl Alcohol or Cetearyl Alcohol can be added to the oil phase for thickening if needed.
Derived from olives, this emulsion system can be used as a stand alone system of creating a stable Olivem 1000 is a PEG-free self-emulsifying multifunctional ingredient?. It is a complex combination of fatty acids, chemically similar to the lipidic composition of the skin surface. Olivem 1000 has the ability to generate liquid crystal structures that mimic the stratum corneum organization. As the sole emulsifier, Olivem 1000 provides a deep moisturizing effect with excellent spreadability and no soapy effect.

Olivem 1000 has a melting temperature of ~70°C and should be added to the heated oil phase.
While an HLB value has been provided to us by the manufacturer, Olivem 1000’s chemistry does not really work based on the HLB system. Its emulsification mechanism is based on liquid crystal formation and therefore the HLB value is not so critical for this emulsifier.

Olivem 1000 leads to very stable emulsions that have a very nice skin feel owing to the liquid structure of the emulsions. The only drawback of Olivem 1000 is leaving a soap like effect over the skin immediately after application. This “soapiness” could be improved by applying 0.5-1% of a fatty alcohol such as cetyl or cetearyl alcohol or by modifying the applied gum.
